I decided to...photograph the idealized scenes that I fantasized about, where songbirds decorated the trees as I moved through the landscape.

I'm so pleased to see Princeton Architectural Press has published Paula McCartney's first monograph, Bird Watching. “These are gorgeous images, and in that sense, they are worthy of their subjects. She’s not laughing at us by drawing us into her fantasy, rather, she’s playfully reminding us that all photographs indulge in certain fictions...she takes us on a journey that is educative and inspiring”.—Darius Himes, editor, Radius Books.

Paula McCartney will discuss her work with Darius Himes (Founding Editor of Radius Books), together with a book signing, on Saturday March 6, 1:00 pm—2:00 pm KLOMPCHING Gallery, DUMBO

The Dreaded Bridesmaid Dress

We have all seen 27 Dresses (well at least I HOPE you have seen it) and know that all bridesmaid dresses are NOT created equal. When I was planning my wedding, I set out to try and find something that was cute and affordable. What I found out was that many "bridesmaid dress" companies charge upward to 350 dollars for a dress you most likely would wear ONCE in your life. Now this coming from a girl who rented her wedding dress (more on that at another time), I couldn't do it. I just couldn't ask the girls to wear a horrible piece of fabric that they would spend way too much money on and never wear again. I mean come on, you ASK these people to be in your wedding cause you love them! Why would you make them wear something hideous?!?!?

Enter J. Crew. I have always loved this store and admired those fashionistas who could rock their apparel with such grace and elegance. My SIL is definitely one of those and I am forever jealous!! My best friend Kristy showed up to a mutual friends wedding wearing this adorable little black dress! Needless to say, when asked where the dress hailed from, she promptly replied "J.Crew". Thus the search for the bridesmaid dresses began.

(Okay you can't really tell the detail but Kristy is the one on the left in the
adorable strapless black dress)

I made my other bridesmaids Whitney and Quinn accompany me to the nearest J. Crew store and try on dresses. NOTE TO BRIDES: My tip would be to have the dresses ordered to the store prior to trying them on so that you aren't left with colors and fabric that you are not liking. The girls were troopers and tried on a variety of styles...all which gave me pause and did not win my heart over. I kept going back to the idea that I wanted a simple, summer feeling and something all my girls could wear (but let's be honest...have you seen my bridesmaids, they are one fine looking group of ladies!
Missing my sisters but this is truly a phenomenal picture!!!

So I kept going back to that one little black dress that Kristy got and thought why not check to see if they have it in my color...and they DID! I was so happy...and guess what! All the girls loved it. So for under 200 dollars, they girls got a dress they liked and looked amazing in and I got to feel somewhat good about not having them pay an arm and a leg for their attire. Oh and my girls also recycled their dresses to another wedding party...so those dresses totally got a two for one deal:) Here they are in the dresses:

Surprises that thrill

In a previous post, I wrote about one of the best surprises of my life. Here is the unedited video from it. Hope you enjoy! Oh...and thanks Dad. You have forever made everyday special. I love you.

Exhibition II: Seeing Red
Crossing Art Gallery 136-17 39th Ave. Flushing, NY

90 Fengxian Road, is a street lined with rows of colonial houses in Shanghai, China, built in 1911 for British missionaries. The road is directly behind a busy shopping section of Nanjing Road in a district called Jing’an. In 2006, New York based photographer HEUNGMAN rented an upstairs room as a home/studio for his 2-year-stay in recollecting memories of the motherland.

Heungman’s first focus was China’s recent past. He started by collecting Cultural Revolution relics and began working on his first project immediately. The controversial juxtaposition of naked female figures along side objects from the Mao era brought Heungman immediate recognition from the local art community but encountering political issues during his first exhibition in China. Because most galleries prefer the practice of self-censorship only a few selected pieces can be shown to public.

Despite this set back, Heungman moved onto a portrait series of twin sisters. Though less radical in point of view, Heugnman is satisfied with the duality and yin yang aspect of the project. In order to further preserve the characteristic of the location on film, Heungman shot a different series of nudes on the antique wood floor of his studio lit only with ambient light.

During his two years stay, Heungman also trained his lens on the every day life in and around the old Shanghai neighborhoods of his adopted home. He was quite delighted to get out of his studio but sad to see much of the neighborhood vanish before new China’s rapid reconstruction. Returning to the United States in 2008 Heungman now divides his time between Shanghai and New York. More about Heungman

Personal Touches make it that much better

I had an amazing meeting yesterday with one of our brides, Ashley (we wrote about her previously in Meet Ashley and Randy). We went to a cute little cafe and sat for about 2 and half hours and talked ALL things weddings. Ashley and Randy are getting married in April and so All You Need Is Love Events is really just acting as their "day of" coordinators but it was fun to sit down and go over a timeline, talk about the specifics, and hear about all the adorable personalized moments they are placing in their wedding.

When I asked Ashley about her invitations, she surprised me by letting me know she actually had a sample to show me. I of course was beyond excited as I love all things invites! Randy (the Groom) is an artist and so he hand designed their invitations using...wait for it...WATERCOLORS! These invites truly are one of the most personal and heartfelt invitations I have ever seen. I tried to capture them via my awesome IPhone camera so the quality is not that great but hopefully you can see how special these invitations are! What I find amazing is that he was able to capture the venue where they are getting married so beautifully that people are asking Ashley if they can keep the response cards. She had to tell them no:) Enjoy!

This is their response card and it features the gates at the LA River Center
where Ashley and Randy are getting married. I know the quality of the picture doesn't
capture it as well but these were done in watercolor! AMAZING!

Back side of the response card.

Cover of the formal invitation.
I love the cartoon versions of Randy and Ashley on the cascading
red carpet into the flower beds. Perfectly LA:)

Backside of the invitation. Sorry it is blurry!

This is my favorite part of the set. Ashley has a large family (she is from Texas) and
it is hard for all to come. SO...they are throwing a reception in TX and this is the
invite for that event. How cute is CA throwing the bouquet to TX? I love this!

This is the backside to that invite. The wording is definitely part of the charm:

"Can't make it out for the wedding or
just can't get enough of Ashley and Randy?
Then you're in luck!"

I just adore the states sipping champagne and throwing confetti together. Randy is from Wisconsin, so that is why the Badger state is hanging out in the crowd. Again, this is just so amazing!

So there you have it. Ashley and Randy are just too creative for words! I think that Randy needs to go in to a little side business doing personalized invitations don't you think???

Brazilian artist, Caio Fernandes, is sometimes described as a Realist painter, "though the sheer intensity of his work sets him apart from most contemporary Realist painters. With a highly individualistic style of painting, Caio reveals the raw physical characteristics and inner tensions of his subjects."

Fernandes published his work
on Blurb only a month ago, and already collector's from all over the world have purchased his book, The Pictorial Consequence: 1999 to 2010. Follow Caio's exceptional world on his blog, Mein Welt. More About Caio Here.

Zombie Ryan Colour

Tried some non-gradient colour for this. I think it turned out well. What I did was use a new layer beneath the lines for the colour. Perhaps some layer masking would result in a cleaner image. I guess I'm still learning to colour inside the lines!

Feeling Nostalgic..

Just to brighten my day, I decided to sift through some wedding shots. Made me nostalgic and excited for my friends that are starting this process and those that are rapidly approaching their wedding dates! This also reminds me how much I ADORE Laura Grier and her photographers:) Stay classy out there!
