Cotton Carry-Lite Mini Review

I have about 100 camera straps. I have a few I really like. But sometimes the straps aren’t the best solution.

Amongst some of the more innovative and unusual systems I’ve found is the Cotton Carrier Carry-Lite for Regular Cameras. It uses a holster on a waste-belt, secured by a camera leash and a shoulder strap.

At first blush, I was very timid about hanging my $5000 Nikon D3s on a holster. I frankly thought it looked unsafe. But it’s much sturdier than it looks. In fact, it feels rock solid. The feeling of security increases if you use the built-in camera tether. This allows you to attach a strap to the camera and a D-ring on the system belt so that IF the camera somehow came out of the holster, the tether strap would catch it. There is a padded shoulder strap that allows you to stabilize the whole system and add another layer of safety and security. If you are a belt system purist you don’t have to use that strap.

Why the holster? The advantage of the holster system is two-fold. You can quickly and easily grab your gear. You can also bend and move without fear that the camera will swing or roll around your body and bump into something. I found it quite freeing not to have to worry about that.

The system ships with one holster, but if you are so inclined, you can purchase another and make this a two-camera carry system. I did just that and found no problems.

Just about any DSLR will work with this system from low-end starter cameras all the way up to semi-pro and pro bodies with battery grips.

One thing to note: many belt systems don’t fit larger people. I am happy to report that those of you who are – like me – horizontally challenged, will have no problem fitting this belt around your waste. Trust me. If it fits me it will fit just about anyone. The manual says it fits up to a 54″ waist.

The construction of the product appears to be well thought-out and build quality first-rate.

If I have any criticism it’s that the documentation could be a bit easier to understand. It took me several tries to get the camera mount to fit properly in the holster. If you buy this system, I strongly recommend watching all the videos on the site and going through that material in addition to looking at the instruction sheet. It might make that part of the process less painful.

In general, I think the Cotton Carry-Lite is a smart idea. I like the execution of the system and the ability to secure your camera(s) in multiple ways. It’s even more useful as a two-camera carry system.

Highly recommended.
