One of the things I love about photography is that it is a way to engage and enter into an investigation of things. When I photograph something I always learn something more about it because there is always a dialog between the object, person, or place and my own attempt to have it represent something. I was attracted to the sewing machine in the following photos because of its simple machine qualities and shapes: lever arms, wheels, and springs. The investigatory process in which I almost always learn something new or imagine something interesting is one of the greatest gifts of being a photographer, but, ironically, it is one of the things that is easiest for me to forget when I am feeling uninspired.
