I met JOHN EDER several years ago when he shot two covers for us for David Lauren's classic Gen X Swing Magazine ("The Magazine for People in Their 20's, the Age Group that Swings the Vote"). One of the covers was an Eder signature image of a young business man free-falling, and the other was of Matthew Fox, a cool guy long before "Lost".

The Football Crowd (above) was commissioned by Getty Images back in the day when they still commissioned photographs. "We had 65 extras in a stadium in Glendora going through all the motions. It was totally artificial, not a real game. I really enjoy directing large crowds. I kind of amazed myself by memorizing the names of all the cast so I could direct them. At the time, I was moaning about how I wasn't making much dough on this mammoth gig - 65 extras, a stadium, six assistants, tons of equipment, etc. etc., and my editor said oh you are gonna make money! Sales were UNBELIEVABLE for the stadium shots."

ANDY LEVIN is a photographer living in New Orleans, Louisiana and a former contributing photographer at Life Magazine and Black Star. In 2007 Levin was a finalist for the Eugene Smith Grant for Documentary Photography. 100 Eyes Magazine is edited, written, (beautifully) designed and programmed by Levin.

SHAHIDUL ALAM founded the Drik Picture Library in 1989 in Dhaka, Bangladesh and Pathshala, the South Asian Institute of Photography, taking advantage of a World Press Photo initiative. Most of the photographers showing work in this issue of 100Eyes went to Pathshala or taught there.

From Andy Levin's Introduction: "Alam and his fellow teachers, along with the World Press folks including Robert Pledge of Contact Press, have done a fantastic job. The students are exposed to classic photojournalism, poring over old issues of Life and National Geographic. Having spent hours going through the Drik archives I can testify to the training of the photographers– they always look for the single image that tells the whole story."

SMITHSONIAN PHOTOGRAPHY COLLECTION

Smithsonian Institution Archives Collections Storage

The Smithsonian Photography Initiative announced The Bigger Picture their new blog which presents an inside look into the Smithsonian’s photography collections. The blog is produced by the Photography Initiative in collaboration with guest contributors from throughout the Smithsonian.

"Photography and the Smithsonian were born within a decade of each other in the mid-19th century. The Smithsonian now has more than 13 million images in 700 collections throughout its 19 museums, nine research centers and the National Zoo. The Bigger Picture uses these collections and the Institution’s experts to stimulate an active conversation about the medium, its history and its meaning in people’s lives. The blog is intended to present multiple perspectives about the impact of photography and highlight the work of curators, photographers, historians and other Smithsonian staff members. It invites the general public to participate in the dialogue by commenting on Smithsonian posts."

The Bigger Picture is great for those of us who love to research vintage photos and a chance to meet the people behind the scene responsible for accumulating, editing and storing them for us.
