Are people overestimating Apple's motives? Could it perhaps not be a masterplan but just that the new motherboard, etc they are using just happens to have this component so it's been included? That could explain why it's hidden around the back. If being placed on the back is deliberate it could just be for aesthetics sake as ports on the front will look messy.

Entirely possible. If you look at this picture of the new Mini's logic board ( from iFixIt's teardown, it looks like the logic board is just wide enough at the front (right side of the board) of the housing to have accommodated the SD card slot. But it looks like it would have been at the expense of either growing the housing so an inserted card sat flush with it, or having the card stick out significantly (and asymmetrically) from the rounded corner.

I really don't get why people who come up with specs don't think ahead. When SD came out it has a 2GB limit. So they updated it, SDHC for a 32GB limit. Now they had to update it again, SDXC for a 2TB limit. They should have just designed the format to scale in the FIRST place.

For example: CompactFlash came out in like 1994 and has scaled all the way up to like 137GB, when the first cards were under 1MB.

Fair point. It could have been a cost-driven design decision to keep the cost of the driver silicon down, similar to those that drove the design of the original USB 1.0 specification.

    With regard to booting:
I think a lot of people in here are also looking over the fact that the card reader is on the USB bus. Meaning the speeds you'd be limited to would be that of USB 2.0. Internal 5400rpm boot drive would still be faster.

The card reader doesn't show up on the Mini's USB device tree in System Profiler, hence is not a USB device. The USB device tree lists every device that is currently enumerated on the bus.

I believe its part of the ethernet controller chip.

Correct. Looking at the BCM57765 block diagram, the SD card data is accessed via the PCI Express bus. The SMBus is several orders of magnitude too slow to handle 2.5GT/s, and is likely used for controlling the driver IC.

So should Apple not have been granted any of their trademarks for use of the word "Apple?"

Well, bear in mind they were sued (successfully, the first time around) for using that! ;)

I'm more concerned with trademark names of products rather than companies, given that each company could have dozens of products, hence there is much greater potential for contention over product trademarks than company trademarks.

Honestly, I don't have much problem where company or product trademarks are generic terms not directly associated with their respective industries, for instance Apple Computers ("Elephant Cars", "Earthquake Chocolates" etc..) The potential for name contention there isn't that great.

But when companies attempt trademark generic terms which have relevance in that specific domain - such as "pod" for a portable device for storing and carrying digital media, the likelihood for contention over names skyrockets.

I don't really have much sympathy for any company who wants to leverage familiarity/phonetic similarity with everyday words, but then in turn fights to have exclusive rights to phonetic variations of it.

It would be nice if apple added "always require password for purchases" to the parental controls. Or a checkbox that says "keep me logged in for 15 mins" on the purchase window.

I think consumers, and Apple, should solve this "problem" without the aid of the government.

Simple common sense. Let's see if the people at Apple:apple: have this.

I, personally, do not want to have to use my password for every single purchase or update, so I really hope that Apple makes this an option and the government does not get involved and make it so it HAS to be entered for every purchase, that would suck :(

As an example, the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry are both 80% U.S./Canadian parts content. The Chevrolet Silverado pickup? ...61%.

My Acura TL is built here from 75% American parts, 15% Japanese and no others listed.

Of course they are less expensive. No packaging, no media, no store space, no shipping required.

    They should be less expensive.

If they were the same price this would be a serious problem. I still have a problem at the outrageous prices of CDs and DVDs because they are more expnsive than cassettes were, but cheaper to produce. It is all about greed and $$.

Apple wants to make money too. but they eliminated some considerable costs.

It is what I've been saying here for the last year. MR readers are not the target audience for the iPad, and that is why they have been so consistently wrong on the iPad's prospects until market data proves them wrong. We are NOT normal -- we like to hang out on a tech rumor site :)

The rest of the world gets the iPad and loves it.

I hang out on MR a lot. And a lot of other tech blogs as well. And I love my iPad 2.

Crap... I'm certainly not normal but I love iPad 2. What am I?

The iPad has broad appeal and I'm willing to bet at least a few people in that room love the iPad and didn't agree with Wozniak when he made the comment.

Honestly, Macrumors, because of all the talk of a Apple-Google war, THIS story is more worthy of page 1 status than a story about executives selling stock ( OR the story that uses the word 'Unsurprisingly' ( right in the headline.

    Everything's flip-flopped today!

I don't know... perhaps the "Join us for a preview of the future of iOS and Mac OSX" Seems like we will be seeing the new iOS features for the first time.

Well, it says a preview of iOS and Mac OS X. We've already seen a preview of OS X, so it's not unreasonable to think we will also see a preview of iOS before this.

EF-s lenses produce smaller image circles. So they are lighter (and cheaper) than a comparable EF lens would be. That's it.

Note the focal length is always the focal length. A 50mm lens still has a 50mm focal length on a 1.6 crop camera. It has a different effective field of view, but that's not the same thing.

Also note this has been going on forever: a 50mm lens on a medium format camera (obviously with a bigger image circle) as a different field of view that it does on a "full frame" camera.

EF-S 10-22mm is the same focal lens as a EF 16-24L lens, why produce a lens EF-S, when on a crop camera you could just add a EF 16-24mm L lens (other than cost).

None of this is true. The focal length does not change. The effective field of view (once again not the same thing) of the 10-22 is the same as a 16-35.2mm lens would be on a full frame camera. If you use the 16-24mm lens on a crop camera it will not have the same effective field of view as the 10-22.

There's something online that says a month of Gold for $1, but I don't want to have to auto-renew after that not knowing the price.
I'm not 100% sure, but I think in order to get the $1 deal, you have to be renewing your membership, not starting it. I don't remember exactly, but a friend of mine tried doing this a while back, and it didn't work. I just stick with the subscription cards for both Live and for MS Points.
I have seen a 12-month card at Amazon for $35. They need an idiot's guide to this...
Yea, if you look around, you can usually find the 12-month cards for under $40. As you found, Amazon is always a good place to start.
Halo 3 so far is a little confusing because I have never used an Xbox controller and it's been years since I played a game like this.
If you end up getting Xbox Live Gold, let me know if you want a co-op partner for some Halo. I'm always game for some Halo, and have played it a ton, so I can help you figure things out if you need. My gamertag is the same as my username here. I wish I could plug up my existing HDDs!
If it connects with USB, you can. If you are wanting to use this for extra Xbox storage, make sure you have everything off the drive before doing this, because the Xbox will need to format it for use.
So thanks again for the advice. If anybody knows something REALLY fun to play that isn't too expensive, I'd love to know.
Not only are these some pretty affordable games, they also just happen to be 4 of my favorites as well. Can't go wrong there.

    Crackdown, $13

    Geometry Wars 2, $10

    Portal: Still Alive, $15

    Rez HD, $10

This survey is seriously flawed. I've been unable to secure an AT&T iPad within the 3 stores near me.

Verizon iPad? They have them, at all combinations. Wi-Fi? Hit and Miss, but AT&T iPads are gone.

Maybe they made way more Verizon iPads? Seems like they would not??? Also, could be that so many iPhone customers in the US are AT&T, they are just naturally migrating to what they know.

I know... many here don't like AT&T, but does the average non-techie care?

Kinda agree i could seem myself using a iPad over my MBP when i am not working, having that separation from programming is what appeals to me.

I want to work when i work and not have to think when i am just browsing the web, in reality the iPad covers all my computing needs when i am not programming.

Though it would be lovely to have Aperture on the iPad to cover my hobby needs but it would require some from of local wireless storage access as i don't think many 25MB images would fit on 64GB.

Yep, it's those pesky 25MB images and 1080P video that keep me at my desk with my iMac. I would love to be able to touch up my full-sized images on the iPad. Give it 5 years.

    Retina Display
backlit keyboard Option (so everyone who wants to have it can have it)
    bigger SSD drives
    faster/newer processor
    upgradable Ram

Now that is something to lol at :p
    Not if you have this
Ignoring current situations and if I could have it any way I want:

    Macbook Air 11.6''

    - Intel I5 ULV, 6mb FSB

    - Nvidia GeForce GTX 460M

    - SD Card Slot

    - Thunderbolt Port in ADDITION to 2 USB ports.

    - Get rid of the bezel around the screen and either make the screen slightly larger or make it black edge similar to MBP.

I would just settle for the i5 and Nvidia chip. As for the collapsable ethernet port... moving parts? ew.

Finalcut, the GameStop copy may say "PC" but Blizzard's games are playable on both Mac and PC using the same disc. Even on GameStop if you open up the System Requirements, under OS it says "Windows / Mac."

That being said, the code that GameStop is usable for both PCs and Macs. The code activates the game in your account, from there you can either download the PC installer or the Mac installer. I'm downloading the Mac installer right now (I got the code about 1.5 hours ago but I was in the middle of a final) and it says it will take about 70 minutes to complete (big file...).

Excited to play, even if it is a little glitchy at first I've been waiting for this game for a LONG time, wish I would've known I could've entered the beta before now. I have the newest Core i7 15" MBP so it'll be interesting to see how it handles that hardware, it should be plenty capable.ahh thanks for the clarifications
    I'm gonna pre-order then

Something I'd like to see is a rackmount SDXC RAID array. Think how many sd slots would fit in a 1U array. I know, probably won't happen, but still interesting to see.

That right there gave me a headache thinking about it. Jeeze...

While I agree the U.S. makers have a large share of the domestic market for pickups etc in the long term they are up against it the Japanese,Australian and to a smaller extent South African manufacturers turn out a much better quality product.I would think the only way for the U.S. manufacturers to survive is by partnering the leading overseas producers and use their technology.

I hope in the long term, US companies partner with many other companies. Yes, it's true foreign companies are ahead, but not that far ahead, imho.

A lot of people blame some of the areas surrounding Detroit's auto industry and areas around Michigan and neighboring states with the decrease in American auto quality and hard times that hit. While this is true to an extent, a large part of the entire region's economic hardship goes back before the 1980s when there was very little GOP support for the farmers in those states.

Even when Ronald Reagan and both Bushes were largely popular almost everywhere else and could find strongholds in nearly every state, the party didn't get the votes in Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois, and Ohio up to where the party expected.

Too many people blame America for making bad cars and thus directly affecting that big section of the Midwest, but by the 1990s the American cars were not really that bad but a lot of the other economies didn't recover. It was far more for the lack of support for farmers there from one of the two major parties.

It's far too much for any single link, or book to show why that section of the Midwest has been more democratic, but the auto industry and its decline is still a smaller segment of the Midwest's economy than agriculture.

By losing a lot of support from that industry in the northern Midwest pretty much cost the GOP the elections in 1976, 1992, 1996, and 2008. That being said, losing the majority of the South cost the democrats the election in 1980, 1984, 1988, 2000, and 2004. It is a wise move for the president to support those states in the Midwest which are hurting and prop up both the auto industry and agriculture industries. If he fails to do so, he could lose to a Republican in 2012. There's no doubt California and New York with be blue states, and Texas and Utah will be red states, but Michigan/Wisconsin/Illinois/Ohio and maybe Indiana could be very close one way or the other.
